Baldur’s Gate 3 Cross-Play Is in Development, Confirms Larian Studios

According to Larian, Baldur’s Gate 3 cross-play cooperative feature was always planned for the future in the roadmap but never intended to be a part of the first release.

Baldur’s Gate 3 will have cross-play, as revealed by developer Larian. However, the precise release date is yet unknown.

Michael Douse, director of publishing at Larian, tells Eurogamer that cross-play was always planned for the game. Douse remarked, “We knew it wouldn’t be ready for launch, but it was always in the plans. It’s on the schedule, and although we have a general notion of when we’d want to have it completed, we don’t want to commit to a firm date just yet.

Since the company hasn’t released the final version of the game yet, implementing the feature may be difficult. Similar to the Xbox port, this one will arrive in due time.

However, I anticipate that Larian will first concentrate on bug fixes and enhancing the ending of Baldur’s Gate 3 with additional cinematics. The second patch, which introduced a happy alternative ending for the Tiefling Karlach, whose storyline had previously concluded in agony, went online last week.

In related news, studio head Swen Vincke has admitted that a problem made the companions in BG3, like the wizard Gale, come off as overly lusty by flinging themselves at the player too quickly. In the game, your romantic prospects are determined by the level of interest shown to you by members of your party. But Vincke says they’ve been working to raise the bar ever since they started off too low.

Naturally, everyone is wondering, “When is Baldur’s Gate 3 Cross-Play coming?” That’s a lot more mysterious. We don’t have a confirmed schedule since Douse’s remarks make clear the team isn’t ready to disclose anything just yet. However, the release of the Xbox Series X/S version might be the best opportunity to debut it.

In an ideal world, those two events would coincide, but because they seem to be in a constant state of change, we wouldn’t bank on their occurring simultaneously. Your cross-play expectations will have to remain hypothetical until we hear from Larian directly.

When is Baldur’s Gate 3 PC & Xbox Series X/S Cross-Play Coming?

Even though it has been announced that Baldur’s Gate 3 would be coming to Xbox Series X/S, an official release date has yet to be set. Due to technical difficulties with Xbox Series S’s split-screen mode, Larian was unable to release it with the PS5. In fact, earlier this year, the development team revealed that they would be skipping the console’s split-screen mode in order to bring the game to market faster.

In conjunction with that news, the development team said that it hopes to release the game by the end of 2023 but provided no other details beyond that. With the PS5 and PC releases under our belts, here’s hoping the next few weeks bring us some solid news.
